    Default Independent specialists

    Hi Guys!

It will soon be time for my first cambelt service on the 355. I live in Sweden but I am thinking about having the service done in Britain since I am going over there this summer and will bring the car. What I would like to know is your experiences with different independent specialists and which one you would suggest to me? I have heard of DK engineering and autofficina, does anyone here have experiences of these two that they wish to share?

Niklas, just curious but any reason you're not considering a main dealer along with the indies? My last service was at Graypaul in Nottingham, was happy with the service and cost me the same as several indies were quoting. This is the place, they're also a sponsor on this site.

There are lots of good specialists in the UK so there should be one fairly close to where you are staying.

If you let the Forum know that we could be a little more precise in recommending a couple?

Thanks for the answers guys, much appreciated.

Why I havenīt considered a main dealer is because my experience is that they are more expensive than indies and that indies are as good or sometimes better. Main dealers I guess only install original parts too and there are sometimes after market products that are better than the original items such as products from Hill engineering and also Tubi if we are talking headers.

I will most of the time be in the London area and then down towards Arundel which is not very far from Southampton and Brighton. Suggestions on good workshops around these areas would be much appreciated. I would not be afraid of driving a little out of my way either if there was a really good workshop.

I read on DK engineerings web page that they charge 1.490 GBP for a service and cambelt change, is that in the region of what other indies charge aswell? I will naturally call around and check with the workshops that might be of interest but just wanted to hear what your experiences are.

Niklas, think there'll obviously be a difference between main dealers, the same as with indies, but it's possible your info could be a little out of date in some areas. The annual I got at Graypaul was the same price as some indies I checked, undercut many though and I couldn't find anywhere significantly cheaper. Don't think they'd have any issue with parts such as Tubi but you'd have to ask. And the guy who did my service had just returned from Maranello where he had won the international Ferrari mechanic of the year competition. They collect from anywhere, in fact you needn't have bought your car as they collect from Europe as well. Price they quoted for a 348 engine out cam belt service is the same as the indies you're looking at and I'd guess a 355 would be no more (but I could be wrong there, never really looked).

I had a cambelts change at Maranello Egham two month ago and they happily changed my tensioners for Hill Engineering ones, which I supplied. I think the only difference is that the repair is not covered by the standard Ferrari warranty - Mandy (on the forum here) can confirm/correct.

Although you are right in that main dealers will not prompt you to use non-OEM parts and will not order them for you - you have to supply them.

Would you really trust a main dealer to work on a 20yr old car ? I bet the guys who trained and know the 355 have long one - and certainly will only do a few a year ?

First time I went in my car was in the shop with a 308, Testarossa, Daytona and 246 Dino. Last time another Dino, 355, 3 F40s and a 288 GTO. They get their fair share of older cars.
