tbh I don't go off road, but I live in the sticks , so I be able to get down the drive (its a fair distance !) when its snows !

I will have a look at the suggested models and report back.

I did buy my mother a cooper s countryman All4..........so perhaps I will give it a spin just to see what its like !

the interior space In a defender is piss poor - esp with read seats. !

shame I cannot afford an FF !

G-Merc. Bit like Defender but MUCH more comfortable, better build quality etc (but more expensive though and not sure if there are RHD version available)

    I have G and I love it.

    I have a Navara.

Not very sophisticated, but its alright.
Doesnt cost me any money, and in 4years has only failed to proceed once - alternator bracket broke within a week of purchase.
Brakes are quite poor and prone to softening further on warmer days.
    Pig to park in town.
B-Roads show up the agricultural and unsophisticated suspension & autobox.
My long average is <25mpg (but I spend a lot of time in town)

But if someone phoned me up and said I needed to drive to Scandanavia for a tonne of parts, I'd set off without even a cursory check of the oil - and I'd be confident of getting there and back stopping only for fuel (and sea crossings obviously) and I'd be warm, comfortable and entertained as it ate the miles.

If I were looking to replace it, I'd probably be looking Amarok or Brabus Vito or another Navara
(but have a copy of the Construction & Use Regulations to hand when I was looking at the former two, to ensure what I bought was a "Dual Purpose Vehicle")

I ran a Navara until a few months ago. Agree with all of the above!

Also had a Jeep Cherokee once which was nice enough. Not bad for towing and again pretty good in the snow. Not as fun as the Wrangler but might fit the bill. If a Cherokee's not big enough perhaps a Grand Cherokee would suit? Just a thought.....

I had an Amarok Auto, cracking vehicle, engine works quite hard and its forever changing gear but it tows well and is very comfy in the front two seats, the kids didn't like being in the back as the back seat is very upright and the drivers seat backs where right in their faces, My only issue with the Amarok was no storage space in the cab, even our old L200 had space behind the rear seats, I have touareg now, and I think its brilliant, fast, quiet (with a nice rumble under load) very comfy and tows like a dream with strong MPG (better than the Amarok) - the touareg will be staying for a long time. (3.0l V6 TDI 245).
