    Default Ferrari 360 Silencer Refurb

The original silencer on my 360 has just about thrown the towel in.
It's puffing loads of dust out and on a recent trip to Italy it felt like it was getting very hot i.e. no insulation.

Whilst looking at options I thought I'd have a go at refurbishing a little use one I picked up off eBay earlier in the year. I was tempted to fit it but the postie dropped it and dinged the corner
I know Geoff's done this on a few also.

Getting the s/s covers off was fairly straightforward once I'd thought about it.

Remove the end strips by grinding the tack weld off then use a 1mm inox disc to cut into the corners.

Repeat 4 times and the same method on the two side welds.

Then remove the end and repeat for the other end.

The bottom cover is tacked in a few places so grind them back the prise open one side seam.

You can the remove the cover without opening the other seam.
    Repeat for the other end.

I've always wondered why the dust came out. The ends of the silencer act like a drum and pump the dust out.
More so with the valves open.

Now I just need to find something to pack it with that won't follow the same fate.....ideally some fairly dense mat 13mm thick that I can glue in place. Morgan Superwool looks good but expensive. Any ideas?

I've knocked a few dings out with my brass ball pein hammer and will polish the visible parts.

    I'll update as I continue....

Ps I'm still looking at alternatives. This is my new standard option and I will do the one I take off also.

    M

A quick search shows Geoff used Morgan Superwool so I've ordered some today.
13mm and the higher density one.
It says it's long fibre so hopefully won't breakdown.

There was also a concern raised about the dust and asbestos type issues.
I used a mask and damped everywhere down when cleaning but out of interest I put a piece in water....

I'm pretty sure it's totally water soluble which is good!

    Default Ferrari 360 Silencer Refurb

Came home tonight greeted by my new insulation tucked behind the wheely bin

It is the 13mm higher density insulation.

I expected it to be difficult to fit the cover but it took about an hour from start to finish.

Firstly after cutting roughly to size I used some sparingly applied spray contact adhesive to hold i"the insulation in place.

Flattening the seam back down is a doddle as the main silencer seam is underneath to support it.

Just need to find a decent TIG welder now (and hide the Ferrari logo before the price trebles)

    Very pleased so far....

Thanks but inspired by Geoff ......

This is a test run as the one on my car although high miles, isn't dented so that's that one I want to get right......

It's now at the welders and I fear this is where it will go wrong as it's out of my control....I've been promised it will be good but fear my version of good will differ from theirs

I should get it back next Tuesday.....

Best of luck. As you know, there are welders that can do miracles. The best, in my opinion, are artists. Hope that it works out for you.

    Collected from the welder today.....
More towards the artist end of the scale so very happy and learnt a lot for the next one
I cleaned it with Alubright and wire wool which shifted the tarnish very effectively.
I think may leave it brushed rather than polish it up....thoughts?
