Thread: What Petrol in Ferrari

    Got round to checking my 308 GT4 instruction book which says
    supercarburant 94/100 N.O. (which I assume means Numero Octane) in Italian and German
    Premium 93/100 O.N. ( think the 93 must be a typo for 98) 4 or 5 star according to BSI system in English. O.N. I assume to be Octane number. 4 star was 98 and 5 star was 101.

    As my engine was rebuilt in 1990 with higher compression even more important I use 98.

    I had a chat with a Ferrari owning friend who is in the oil business (he specialises in deep sea drilling - the engineering side not actually doing it) who is pretty clued up on all things to do with oil including petrol. Pity he isn't on here to add to the discussion but he doesn't like forums. He pretty much concurred with what has been said on here from the resumé I gave him. He said that he believed that EU regulations require that all current production cars should run on 95 and that the ECUs should be able to detect the knock point and adjust the timing to maximise performance. He agreed that the biggest benefit of 98 fuel is the better additives. With insider knowledge he wouldn't touch Esso with a bargepole and that in terms of additives the two best are Shell Vpower 98 and Tesco 99.

    Interestingly he pointed out that petrol formulation changes from winter to summer with more volatility in winter than summer to help cold starting in winter and less evaporation in summer. He didn't know whether Mon's fuel from Grangemouth would be the same as my fuel from Fowey at this time of year (apparently temp in Aberdeen today is 11 deg). So lots of variables.
