    Default Question about Ferrari 288 GTO

    The car is beautiful. I remember seeing a model very similar to it in the driveway of this old farmhouse I used to drive by. Clearly it wasn't a multi-million dollar GTO, but it looked just like that model.

    Could anyone tell me what model Ferrari this was? Perhaps the 308?

    Could have been, 308 is probably the most similar to the 288 GTO, both were designed by the same guy (who also designed the Boxer, F40 and 348). Sort of hard to say without more details about the car you saw though.

    The 288 GTO is a homologation special, based on a 308.

    GTO = Gran Turismo Omologato

    There's at least one 308 or 328 has been made to look like a 288 GTO with the wider body panels etc - a yellow one I seen at Knockhill a couple of years ago

    So lets put a $25k body kit on a $50k (guessing) 308 and what do we have...a kit car worth $10k, and that's vested in the original Ferrari parts that are left!

    (But at least you get some shields with the kit...oh hang on a minute they are not OEM but copies...!)

    Still, each to his own!

    +1

    On both parts ie including each to their own. Why anyone would do this to a fantastic car like a 308 is beyond me though.

    Isn't the 288GTO longer than the 308?

    A little, yes. Not really noticeably so though. The wheelbase is more considerably longer, but the overhangs are shorter.

    I actually got in touch with the chap who sells these and he told me the preferred car to do this to is a 328 rather than a 308.

    I cant find the link now but there is also an amateur out there somewhere who converted his 328 to a "288" by making the panels himself - very impressive.

    A steal at $107k
