Default Best car races not on the race track

This is the thread I was thinking of a few days ago...

What is your best car race story in the last year on a motorway or somewhere not on a racetrack?? Must be some good stories out there and much better than mine

For me in the last year it was last weekend of October last year - it is was good Saturday all in all

Got up Saturday played golf, then went to gym & for a swim before driving from Junction 18 to 1 of the M4 for a party in Ealing . At Junction 17 a DB7 pulled up evidently looking for a race & that was it red rag to a bull Raced at around 110 - 120 all the way The DB7 obviously much better than my car, as mine only 225 bhp but I think the the DB7 was more scared than me Best bit was in the excitement of the chase I forgot to get off at the the North Circular A406 Realised my mistake at Hammersmith roundabout & left the DB7 behind This was when a Saab had decided to join in the screeching off from the traffic lights along with us

Anyhow then went to a Comedy Club & then a party until 4 am with lots of Polish peeps drinking vodka & chainsmoking - but being a I stuck to wine - can't take the hard liquor any more & cannot stand smoke

Anyhow am sure this is lame but hoping will hear of some good race stories

Where do you play golf Antonia? As I'm from your neck of the woods and know most of the golf courses I just want to check out how arduous that was. Did you use a buggy or motorised trolley?

We just have to get this stuff sorted to understand your physical condition at the time of the race.

BTW - the new name suits well

Hi Glad you like the new name - much better

I play golf at Farrington Golf Club in Farrington Gurney at present as get lessons with John Cowgill the top Pro there. However, when finished the lessons there is one in Wells that is very good so will join there probably in September when I get a huge bonus from my job Otherwise I play in Pennsylvannia, US, Jericho club - my brother lives there - I know sounds OTT but is true

    Do you know Farrington??

Then what is your racing story - bound to be good

Right - not going to fall for that one

But, yes was silly as meant to be lots of speed cameras along the M4

What supercar do you run at 69 mph?? I don't believe you stick to 69 You can go at 78 without getting nicked - this was highly publicised when they put all the cameras on the M4. Being a saddo I drive it 3 - 4 times a month At first behaved but now I just speed

No I don't know Farrington but will make sure to try it out.

What do you play off. I never understand the ladies' handicapping system. Seems over compicated. can you explain it?

And what were you driving in your race? Or did I miss that?

I'd like to say Farrington looks nice but their website is crap ( I know - I do that for a living) and it gives no clue about the golf course

i think they've forgotten they are a golf club and they have become just a conference/event centre.

    Sorry

Long, long long ago.... in my days as a commercial es**** ag***, I had the good/mis-fortune to have an Escort 1.4L (in red) as a company car. Basic thing with wind up windows, but the "lean-burn" engine was very willing and capable of taking considerable abuse from a wannabe yuppy. ... much more so than the 1.3..... ... stay with me...

Heading down to my folks place in Sussex, I get overtaken by some tool in a 3.6 manual XJS! bit of an audacious move on the outside of a left hander, so obviously that was all that was needed to "pick the pace up" somewhat..

At first, it was obvious he thought I'd fade into the background after a mile or so.... but what he couldn't have known was that I knew the road like the back of my hand, having traveled it hundreds of times! ....

.... we start passing cars at an alarming rate.... "bollox, this guy's pretty handy" I think to myself, and a twang of regret enters my mind. But wait!! a patern starts to emerge that I can take advantage of..... I see him glancing in his mirrors too often for someone who's comfortable with their progress, like he's sweating and nervous... you see it in the sawing at the wheel, the clumsiness of his lines, the missed apex's.... yes, I think I have him worried...!

...and so he should be. His 221hp Jag may be loosing me on the straights, but the poxy Escort is gathering him in through each corner.... We've been at it for 10 mins now, the gap between us ranging from 6ft to 150yds. I get my opportunity as we take a line of dawdling commuters.... he does two, I make the third as well! The lead is mine.

I'm flat shifting the 4-spd 'box with no mercy, this is a full on race now. The valves are bouncing, the suspension crashing... but I can't stop now. Ah nuts, we've hit a long straight and he's come past me at... I guess 120+... can't live with that! but I know thew series of s-bends at the end of the straight can be taken at 60ish, and I'm hoping he'd gonna be doing 40-50 through them.

My predictions are correct, by the time we exit the s-bends the gap has gone from 150yds to 20! The village approaching will throw up more obstacles and chances. But common sense prevails... we both reduce speed in the restricted zone, and once out the other side, I pass him on the wrong side of the roundabout to regain the lead...!

Went along like this for half an hour or so..... not causing danger or upset to others, using some common sense when in built up areas.... and when I had to turn off to my folks place.... we both exchanged a friendly wave.... mutual respect for one another.

    Oh happy days....

Hello I don't understand the ladies handicap system yet either but no doubt the Pro will explain soon as that becomes more relevant. All I know at the moment is that ladies get the easy tee off area [a bit like darts & the oche line ]. Will explain when I find out  I might ask Jon my teacher in the meantime

From the local golfers I hear Farrington is good for lessons but not membership & Wells is best - so I will join there. It is a great drive there too Fast

I was driving my Audi TT 225 bhp in the race Can't wait to get a higher bhp though

    Where do you play??
