Giles’ 458 Italia On-Line Scrapbook

Picked up the 458 today, pretty much the first dry day all year so that was a welcome break in the relentless rain.
This is interesting and it does say something about the main dealers, and an insight into how they operate.
The 458 is 16 years old now, so it should be time for the spark plugs to be changed. (8 year service interval) but even though the garaged asked for a full service, they didn’t do the plugs. Apparently the garage was given a choice of a minor oil and filter or full service, they requested full. Not sure who if someone is being economical with the truth but plugs not changed and brake fluid not changed.
Anyways, I had chat with the people who sold me the car and they agreed to pay for the spark plugs and I’ll get them fitted.
The drive home was great, performed well, a few leather on plastic creak noises but other than that it was spot on. However, when I got home and selected reverse to put in the garage I got my first failure! 🤣

I what’s app’d the image to Rob at Portland and he said, get the code read when I take it in for the plugs and he’ll sort it. No quibble, no excuses, just commitment. I’m pretty pleased with that, just got to make sure it does get sorted 👍
I had forgotten a few things about the 458, epic noise in Race, shocking fuelling calibration (when you lift from 5% throttle to 0% you get a hard fuel shut off, very binary, it’s on or off, trying to deliver a smooth transition from very light throttle to coasting is not possible, like it is in the 488).
I don’t miss the carbon interior at all, in fact I think the grey plastics they use look very good, well judged and suit my classy rather than a racey interior.
I miss the cruise control, I might buy the part and get it coded in.

My car is still as per factory spec with the exception of the rims. It should have the standard 20” rims, but they have been changed to a Grigio Corsa gloss finish option forged 5 spoke rim, the rim most 458’s are on. Question is, should I go back to the original as built condition? The option rim does look better in my opinion, but that’s not to say the standard rim is a pig, in fact I quite like it and you rarely see a car with them on…… but obviously there is a reason for that!

That noise, blimey, that’s something that will never get old.
Cheers, Giles

Luckily, it was a short screw!

I have found NGK MR8AP8HJS plugs from a local supplier at a good price £157 for a set of 8 which is a much better price than Eurospares (about £230). I’ll get these fitted as soon as I can get booked in with Sam at Stradale Italia. Sam also says the error message on the parking sensors will likely be a failed sensor.
Hopefully an easy fix.
Cheers, Giles

Hi Folks,
Just for information, out of curiosity, I got a price from Ferrari Swindon today for a set of 458 spark plugs, £499.10 inc VAT for a set of 8, that’s £62.38 each! I’ll stick with my £19.51 each inc VAT price from a local spark plug supplier 👍
So it’s either £156.10 or £499.10 for the same product but in different boxes!
Tough choice! 🤣
Cheers, Giles

Those little boxes with horses are very expensive!!’

I gave up on DL a few years ago for anything to do with servicing; prices went stupid, even compared to other main dealers.

I've been looking at places for my upcoming annual service and my local main dealer gave me a price and said it'd be around £600 more for spark plugs and air filter. I also said cheers but I'd do it myself.

I fitted on my 348 those iridium’s recommended on here . It’s easy enough. Iirc something like £130 ish . E bay but I was careful with the source after reading plenty of fakes in circulation.

Think I bought mine from Halfords last time I fit them but not 100% sure.

Yes, there are fakes out there, but I’m confident with the supplier I’m using (Vega Racing in Napton on the Hill) as they are waiting on stock availability direct from NGK.
Hopefully my due diligence has been sufficient!

Hi Folks,
I’ve just had the 458 Spark Plugs fitted by Sam at Stradale Italia. Of the 8, 7 came out easily, and one had some resistance but with a bit of penetrating fluid and some gentle working it came out.
Photos….

Plugs…. (£156.10 for a set from Vega Racing, Napton, better than £499 for a set from the main dealer!)

While that was being done and the beautification side trims out I took the opportunity to remove the god awful prancing horse under the internal rear glass, you can see it in the photo below.(Also see code read for a faulty park sensor)

That horrible engine bay prancing horse is the Ferrari equivalent to those who have added a Jaguar leaper mascot to the bonnet of modern Jaaags 😊

Hi Folks,
It’s new car time again! 🤓
I’m currently waiting to pick up a 458 Italia.
In my eyes, although I’m sure many will disagree, it’s absolutely stunning. I think it is possibly the lowest specification 458 I’ve ever seen, it’s got pretty high miles for one of these and it’s one of the early cars. Sounds like a disaster melting pot, but I’ve been to see many 458’s many with much fewer miles showing on the odometer but this one is by far the best condition vehicle I’ve seen priced at under £140k which was my limit. The interior in particular is in sensational condition. The exterior checks out well with the all the sensitive areas checked and passed scrutiny of my calibrated geeky eye.
It is off for a main dealer service at either JCT900 or Graypaul Notts, the health check report will be interesting especially brake wear %. The car gives the impression of light, steady and gentle use, as does the specification and colourway.
It’s a 2 previous owner car on the V5C so I’ll be the 4th owner, not bad in 16 years.
Time will tell but I think this will be a nice addition.

Love Grigio Titanio with Bordeaux leather… the interior is most certainly done in a sophisticated tasteful way, zero carbon, comfort piped seats with restraint demonstrated on the options tick sheet, but things that make a big difference like matching leather colour on the centre tunnel and matching Grigio Scuro stitching, piping and heather headlining all giving a very classy feel.
I like the unbranded wing too, subtle. This is very much a 458 under the radar!
Looking forward to finding out what the ownership experience will be like 👍
Cheers, Giles

That is a stunning car. I recently went to view a 458 Italia at Portland Autos. Unfortunately, the condition was not what I was looking for, but I fell in love with the 458.
I'm trying to find a good one, but it is proving difficult at the moment.

Yes, I noticed they had a few other 458’s, but even though the one I bought was the cheapest with 29k miles it was, by a country mile, the best condition, not only there but of all the cars I saw in the run up to buying, I had seen, astonishing really.
Since buying it I have been doing some homework on who the previous owners were, which in the days of GDPR is somewhat more difficult. However, I’ve learnt that the first owner who specified it from new is an ex Ferrari Owners’ Club chairman, as I’m involved with the club I knew him and had been with him around various tracks including Silverstone in various Ferraris, so it’s kinda explains the top condition.
I have subsequently found out that he fitted a Ferrari accessory to the car and I was wondering if anyone else has the HS Handling Suspension kit? See images….

Apparently it bridges the gap between the standard Italia and the Speciale.

When the roads warm up a bit and the rubber gets a tad softer, I’ll see what it’s like 👍
Cheers, Giles

Not sure what it would cost at the main dealer but I noticed Eurospares are selling the kit for about £4,000….

unless its used, you cant rely one iota on their pricing oem parts.

besides they get them from Maranello, so far better to go to the source, who will also give a discount

This is really interesting as I didn't know this was an option. I would want to lower the vehicle using Novitec springs but I've heard on YouTube you can have issues with the dampers doing this.

Very nice. Without the shields it looks very clean. I find the bright red a bit too intense, the Bordeaux is 👌🏻
