Interesting article here about how the legendary Schumacher's retirement came about :

On the afternoon of Tuesday 5th October 1999, Montezemolo rang Schumacher at his home in Switzerland to ask if he would change his mind and drive. But Schumacher’s young daughter Gina-Maria answered the phone and told Montezemolo that her daddy was getting out of his football boots.
Montezemolo questioned the little girl more closely and ascertained that she and her brother had been enjoying a rough game of football in the garden with their father.

Not sure about how accurate this is - hopefully cgt can comment

Sorry mate just saw this. Tom Rubython really does not have a good reputation but this article does have the ring of truth. There was definitely no man-love between MS and Luca on the Monza podium and the press releases were handed out virtually as he got out of the car, pre-empting his announcement in the press conference. Either way, he left too early, how cool would it have been if we had a season of MS vs Kimi in the same car in 2007? :cry3:

Oh and he really really deserved to win the title in 2006 were it not for that blown engine, he drove a better season than some of his earlier championships and really fought back against Alonso in the second half of the year which illustrates the point that he was on top form at the time.

Agreed, but wasn't Kimi as a team mate the trigger that Luca used to cause the MS retirement? according to the article. Drivers shouldn't get too involve in politics, especially with experts. What goes around comes around.

I read the article at the time. As Faisal says, Rubython does have the reputation of embellishing the turn, if not outright making ups stories. he has been successfully sued for libel on a few occasions/. I suspect that there is a lot of truth in the basics of the article but I would be dubious about some of the detail. I think it is generally accepted that Michael didn't want the announcement to be made at Monza, what is less certain is the question of whether he wanted to retire at all. I do find it strange that if he was actually forced to retire, he then so enthusiastically continued with his relationship with Ferrari as an ambassador. He certainly didn't need the money and one would have half expected him to just sever relations.

No doubt at some time a more respected journalist will write a well researched book about it and we may get a more reliable version of events.

Thanks for that - after what you guys said I looked at my first post :

And then looked up wikipedia where it says that Schumi's daughter was born in 1997, making it rather unlikely that a German 2 and a half year old toddler could converse in English with Montezemolo :hmmm:

And her brother who she was playing the rough game of football with was six months old at the time

I really do hope that we can get the correct story one day

Sammy - I think there is enough evidence that the "football" phone call did take place though the details might not be correct. Certainly MS did not at the time seem keen to come back and help Irvine win the long sought for championship that Michael saw as his. Though when he did reappear he did do a good job of helping Irvine who didn't win it of his own accord.

That is typical Rubython extending the facts. Another one who is just as bad is Tom Bower whose Ecclestone biography is riddled with obvious factual errors, so much so that you tend to disbelieve the accuracy of any of his insights.

It's actually true. Her Dad is after all one of the most intelligent racing drivers in history, so apparently both his kids were doing advanced mathematical algorithms virtually as soon as they were born. Ross Brawn will not admit this but the 2006 Ferrari aerodynamics were done by the junior Schumi-Fraulein, hence why Ross stormed off in a huff on the pretence of going fishing for a year :tongue3:

What was funny was how hard Schumi tried not to beat Irvine in Suzuka, yet was still so much faster throughout the race

I'd remembered a previous post you made re Japanese/Chinese F1 race coverage and desperately tried to find the site  Massive fail and now the missus is back in the living room and despite me sowing the seeds and getting her to try to understand the reason I need the lapop, she doesn't know or care who Raikkonen is

I'll check the chinatube as soon as I get a chance - thanks as always
