348 code reading ?

Newbie to this modal here .
I am I right that uk spec ( EU ) cars with the 2.7 have a pigtail hanging off the main ECU s ?
Reading F chat with is heavily US oriented they have a red button and I believe a couple of slow down buttons that the EU s don’t have .

I have removed the cover behind the seats to find a 3 wire female plug dangling .
So how do you read any codes ?

Q 2 mines a 94 is there a EML light like modern cars ?

Everything turns off at start btw .

I realise it’s the last of the analogue pre 5.2 OB11 . Which was one of the attractions over a 5.2 355 spider , amongst other desirable user differences of a 30 odd yr old car

Edit ^ sorry my bad when I turn the ignition ( but not start ) the two slow down lights in red at the side momentarily do come on for a second then go off . This is without the engine starting .

I've never had the need to read the ECU codes but know there is a way of doing it so guess you plug into the leads you've found. Just checking but do you have an issue with the car or is this more for curiosity?

Thx for responding. I have had intermittent bank shut down . I think it’s cy 5-8 the LHS as the slow down flickered momentarily then approx 10 mins later the power went on one side .Still drivable just powerless .
Approx 3-4 mins later normal service resumed .

Googling around ( most F chat strikes ) it seems either the cat ECU or the temp sensor .
Poor weather recently means I haven’t been able to disconnect ( I know you binned your cat ECU s - reading historic threads ) .Of swap stuff around to est a diagnosis.

All I have done is a hard reset bt switching the batt off and restarting at tick over for 15 mins for the engine ECUs to relearn .But as said I had been able to run out and test it yet !

The left Cyl 5-8 CAT ECU on the rear strut is black potted. While the Right cyl 1-4 has the later green potting .

I have changed the gear box oil and while under it checked the connections of the pair of crank sensors they look new ish seemed ok ?

I have also ordered a bottle of sablident contact stuff , once it arrives will clean up as many contacts and paste up with this miracle stuff and see what happens. I plan on doing the relays under the passenger foot well as well .

Just thought if we could read a code ? So removed the cover in the cockpit to find two 3 wire pigtails .
Americans US spec has a red button to press to activate a dash flashing sequence to ID codes .Unfortunately our EU / U.K. spec hasn’t got this .

Great car btw loving the analogue side if it .

Feels rarther simple to DIY I like the 2.7 thingy ……just a bit disappointed you can’t access codes .
Understand dealers have a “ SD1 “ ? Pigtail is the connection .

Yep, think you're right and dealers or specialists are able to get the codes so there must be a way.

Good call on the contact cleaner, you wouldn't believe how many faults that can fix. It's also worth taking the MAFs off and cleaning the inside wire with MAF cleaner. I believe there's a 'self clean' where the wire gets very hot but a good clean is easy to do and may help.

Thx chaps .
Cleaned with contact cleaner the alcohol type whereby you wait for it evaporate.
The CAT ECU leads x 2 each and the MAF and throttle position plugs .
That’s all .
Dry day took it for a 60 mile run mostly quiet motorway so ran 4 th to create heat .

Happy to report ——
Not a single issue .

It’s not been used much prior my purchase and I think it was just corrosion of various pins in those 4 plugs .

Anyhow when the stabident stuff arrive I will redo them and others a can find .

Thx for the help guys .

Is to go circumnavigate Italy via the “ passes “ next summer .

[ Not fused a about ultimate performance, I am retired and past all that .]

Feels like it will make great summer GT / cruiser in the EU .Hood down 😉.

I like the relative lack of electrotwackery found on post 95 cars .
Even the manual roof is bliss in simplicity and present zero worries on a trip .

You will most probably enjoy this (don't be put off by the title)

Yeh sums up the “ modern classic “ 90 experience very well .

Prefer this vid . Echo s my thoughts in picking a 348 SP , over and above the simplicity compared to a 355 SP .
If you take the performance out of the equation ( as a mature experienced sports car owner ) this is my 4 th F car and every one I sold for considerably more than I paid for it , the appreciation covered the maintenance, so free motoring with a first Testarossa in the 90 s .Then second 360 M F1 in the early noughties when Schumacher and the F1 gearbox were de rigeur.
I am hanging on to the third F car a 208 GT 4 as there’s just something special about 4 twin barrel Webbers opening behind your ears .Gandini s passed away so the 70 s wedge Bertone thingy style , values will only head one way .Aside simple as a wheelbarrow to maintain.

Warning - rant ahead 😀😗
Can’t be doing with dash lights , F dealer only plug in diagnostics , CCB with there sword of Damocles replacement costs hanging over you . Not to mention pad prices .
Silly electrotwackery with hoods and folding roofs , Daft F1 gearboxes and stupid modern Ferrari DCT gearboxes awaiting to be replaced as no one can maintain them . Oh and physically of new F cars in terms of parking and living with it .Do they have to be so massive ?
Thinking 599 vs Jag F types- size wise .

To do what ?
Drive in pot holed speed camera , dash cam populated , over crowded U.K. filthy roads ?
Sat depreciating as well . Big time if bought brand new .

Can't argue with much of that :) On and off I've thought of moving on from the 348 for the past few years, have owned her for a little over 13 years now, but every time I consider it I get a bit stumped as to what to replace her with. They're just a really good combo of old unassisted feel but with enough performance to have fun to go with it.

Great looking Spider btw. Think yellow really suits the 348 Spider.

Agreed ^

cat ecu; just disconnect them. they are only there as temp overheat protection for the cats. ecus are notorious for failing and about the same price as aftermarket cats!
