Dino restorations

:dude: must be ultra rare colour still

It is and my third one will be in an even rarer colour still when it goes back to it's original finish. Stayed tuned.... all will be revealed on that in around two months or so.

Iain, I drooped my car off with a specialist Saturday and there was a Yellow Dino on the ramp that they are restoring. It was supposed to be a rare car ?? the story goes like this

There were 3 cars kept back by the factory to be used at Le mans but they never used them, this car was one of them ? I know he brought it as a shell and has had to find / make a lot of parts for it.

Sound about right ?
The owner of the car was there working on it and he had quite a collection  and he showed me the chassis number in a big Dino book so sounded right.

The honest answer is that I have no idea Paul. It sounds like it could be a romantic made up story but you never know. The last GT version built in January 1974 was chassis number 07650 which came to the UK. After that car a further 305 GTS versions were built with the final 17 built in June 1974 all going to to the US.

The only car shown to have entered Le Mans in the Dino Compendium book is a heavily modified 246 GT in race trim, chassis number 02678, which was ordered by Luigi Chinetti the US importer and entered in the race under his NART team.

If you can get the chassis number I will ask the Dino guru in Germany for you. If anyone will know the answer it will be him

Hi Paul,

You've been to see Gary Tate then! thats Brian Smiths car, Gary is slowly assembling the car piece by piece, if it's not brand new then it has to look brand new before it can be fitted, lovely clean project, the story is genuine, Brian is quite a collector.

was that Brian's F40 on the ramp ??? looked super clean when I was last there

Yes is was Brian  only had a 15 min chat with the guy but was very down to earth. He told me about some of his other collection but did not want to post about it as some people like to keep it private.

He told me the story on the Dino and why he was restoring it and also about the F40 he just brought that Gary had to have the engine out of it :thumbsdow

I would have liked to stooped and chatted with him as he is my type person but the wife was outside texting me to hurry up as i had to pick up our daughter  Maybe next time.

There was a yellow Dino at one of the FOC meets last Summer - I didnt know at the time but it turned out it used to belong to our local chemist - how mad is that - he kept that quiet! LOL

That yellow car is the one I mentioned back in post #17 which was bought by someone on Pistonheads. It has a whole list of incorrect details that would be costly to correctly. Caveat Emptor on some of these cars really does apply now that prices are on the rise.

It would do me! ;-') LOL

Ive got some more pics of Dinos which I took about 25 years ago - there was a chap who lived in Southport who owned 2 - red dinos -one a hard top and one a GTS - both were absolutely immaculate - IIRC one of them had "RAF" in the number plate.

At the time a "nice" dino was going for around £15k - still out of my price range though :-(

There was a chap at the NW (I think) concours a couple of years ago whom had his pint pot on the roof of his Dino, which attracted my attention. A real engineer and a bit eccentric I'd say. It had Ferrari V8 under the bonnet

Thats this one - its got a 328 engine in

NB. Might be best to not look at that Iain - it seems to be the opposite of what yours stand for!
