Giles’ 458 Italia On-Line Scrapbook

Hello Giles
Following your 458 scrap book with interest as I have recently acquired one.
What method do you use to attach a front number plate?
Do you run the car without one?
Any updates on your ownership experience would be welcomed.

Hi Terry,
The 458 had gone to a new lucky owner, that was was just about the best 458 I’ve seen, and unfortunately it also meant that I didn’t get out in it as much as I had hoped. Funnily enough I’m looking for another more useable example at the minute but the prices have become quite strong.
Numberplates: you have a few options, firstly they do stick to the bumper above the air intake. You can buy a Carbonio clamp type ‘no drill’ plate holder. You can fit the standard numberplate plinth but that means drilling the bumper. Or obviously you could run without a front plate, however a few people have said recently the police are focussing on this trying to dissuade drivers doing it. I’ll try to post a pic of my old 458 with a standard front plate stuck to the upper surface and my 488 carbonio clamp mount….

Hello Giles
Thanks for your informative reply.

The photos were a really good guide.

I have manufactured a Carbonia type clamp and currently have that on the car.
The bottom of the plate is attached to allow for a distance of 90 mm to ground level to act as a scrape guide.
The underbody of my car has a clearance of about 140 mm.

I have also purchased a stick on plate from Pro-plates.
Conforms to the latest BSau145e.
Standard size 520 x 111 with standard size digits.
I don’t intend to “trim” the plate but it does look long on the upper bumper.

Time will tell which way I go but I have no intentions of risking attention from the bib.

I am not sure if you know but I have successfully upgraded the 458 GTB platform to drive like the 458 Speciale (or ++) which is really wakes up the platform. Just as I pioneered on the 360 platform (do a search, to beyond CS), the F430 platform (to Scuderia spec or better), 599 (to beyond GTO), etc.. If your interested to know more send me a pm.

Hi Folks,
It’s new car time again! 🤓
I’m currently waiting to pick up a 458 Italia.
In my eyes, although I’m sure many will disagree, it’s absolutely stunning. I think it is possibly the lowest specification 458 I’ve ever seen, it’s got pretty high miles for one of these and it’s one of the early cars. Sounds like a disaster melting pot, but I’ve been to see many 458’s many with much fewer miles showing on the odometer but this one is by far the best condition vehicle I’ve seen priced at under £140k which was my limit. The interior in particular is in sensational condition. The exterior checks out well with the all the sensitive areas checked and passed scrutiny of my calibrated geeky eye.
It is off for a main dealer service at either JCT900 or Graypaul Notts, the health check report will be interesting especially brake wear %. The car gives the impression of light, steady and gentle use, as does the specification and colourway.
It’s a 2 previous owner car on the V5C so I’ll be the 4th owner, not bad in 16 years.
Time will tell but I think this will be a nice addition.

Love Grigio Titanio with Bordeaux leather… the interior is most certainly done in a sophisticated tasteful way, zero carbon, comfort piped seats with restraint demonstrated on the options tick sheet, but things that make a big difference like matching leather colour on the centre tunnel and matching Grigio Scuro stitching, piping and heather headlining all giving a very classy feel.
I like the unbranded wing too, subtle. This is very much a 458 under the radar!
Looking forward to finding out what the ownership experience will be like 👍
Cheers, Giles

Congrats and enjoy. Personally I think it looks stunning, too.

I know many like it but I've never been a great lover of too much carbon - a little can add something but I think occasionally it can be overdone.

I'm not sure a mid-engine V8 Ferrari can ever be 'under the radar' but I do think it looks classy.

Looks good Giles. Saw a Porto in very similar combo today; looked very classy.

I presume this is “in addition to”?

You finally pulled the pin then! Congrats on the new purchase. Spec kinda reminds me of an F Type I know well… Try not to put the red seat covers on 🤣

Hi Folks,
Thanks for the votes of confidence above guys, very much appreciated (seat covers will be used! 😆😇)

The 458 is now ready, it has been to Graypaul Nottingham for the annual service and critically it has also had an almost clean green health check done.
There were two amber issues, first the crackle finish red paint is lifting in places on the intake plenum chambers which isn't an issue to me.
Also, the vehicle service 'coupons' embedded in the vehicle's software has run out, as it is 16 years old. This means Ferrari will not log the subsequent servcies on their global(?) system and instead you are reliant on the stamp in the service book. To 'add' an additional 14 (from memory) service 'coupons' in the vehicle memory would cost about £1000, on balance, not worth it, so going forward I will make sure my book gets stamped!
Brake wear is:
Discs, 10% front, 14% rear.
Pads, 40% front, 40% rear
This was good enough for a green tick, no issues. No high spots, corrosion or noise (I will believe that when I hear it, or not as the case may be).

I just need to arrange pick up now, exciting times 😁

Cheers, Giles

Health check from Graypaul Nottingham:

All looks good, but you never know if they have a cozy relationship with the selling dealer and therefore maybe more inclined to portray the vehicle in a good light?
I will probably take it down to Sam at Stradale Italia to give it a once over.
Cheers, Giles

I think it's more often the opposite - more than ready to point out things other dealers have missed and provide a price list for them to rectify it but I guess a second look never hurts.

looks good; but always worth a second look by someone you know.

I was done over on the ppi on the 348; well known indy; but was either blind or in cahoots with the selling indie!

but Id have thought a main dealer was more inclined to find stuff to fix for you than others!
