Saga of the Aston Martin Valkyrie

Just posted an article on the story of the Aston Martin Valkyrie from the initial idea to the 1st delivery:

Any surprises?

Not for those of use who have been close to the project.

Some minor inaccuracies but pretty close to the story in general.

The only people that play the small volume limited edition HyperCar game are Ferrari and those individuals whose personal vision and company structure can allow it.

Koenigsegg
Pagani

Everyone else either overcooks too many cars with not quite enough ‘specialness’.
Mercedes
Porsche

Or uses volume production thinking in the low volume game and misses the whole point.
Toyota
Honda
Audi
McLaren

Some of the revelations in these recent stories have been known for years.

Special series vehicles are seldom made in the factories that bear their brand names.

Still is was something to see carbon panel tooling showing up on eBay recently from a disgruntled and allegedly unpaid supplier.

Seems Papa Stroll is blaming COVID for not meeting his targets and needs an additional three years to meet his targets!

Sweepstake if they still exist by then?

Not really. To survive, small scale specialist manufacturers need a big coporate parent comany with deep pockets as Ferrari had and maybe still has. Otherwise its cash they run out of as happened to Lotus, Lambo, Aston and even Ferrari in the day. Quite why someone like Stroll, who had enough about him to build up a big business, has got involved I do not know. But I bet he is regretting doing so.

Or do millions in merchandising, licensing, financial services and design consultancy.

Stroll is a smart man - it is the best way to ensure his son has a career in F1 - it is a relatively cost effective way of doing it compared to others.

When the kids career is over he will sell up and will have lost how much?

Recent days have been interesting for Aston in F1.

Hulkenberg who hasn't sat in a car for a year and has zero experience of the new regulations turns up to sub for Vettel and comprehensively outdrives young Stroll. Then Otmar Szafnauer who did a lot to build the team over the past decade gave an interview saying Stroll Sr meddles too much in F1 implying he doesn't have the knowledge to deliver results. I have to admit when he took over the team I wondered if this was the latest in a very long line of rich people buying into F1 teams, finding out it's much more complex than they think before walking away.

Oh and Otmar also made the point that he took the major sponsor to Alpine F1 with him just to rub salt in the wound.

I don't think there is a lot of love lost between Stroll and any of his ex-employees. I cant see how this ends well for Whitmarsh either.
