Adrian's 355 musings

run from switzerland to france (Beaune).

Stopped at the International Horology Museam. All the parking in the area was reserved; and lots of cops giving us funny looks!

When we came out the german FOC had just turned up under police escort! 50 cars, parked down every side street. Part of a week long tour. Apparently, before covid they had 45 cars go down to turkey…how epic is that! puts uk foc to shame, picnic baskets and blazers!!!!

After the museum we did a bit of the “Grand Tour of Switzerland”. https://www.myswitzerland.com/en-ch/experiences/experience-tour/car-motorcycle-grand-tour/

Some great roads, then went into france and just started picking D roads that looked fun! Got totally carried away, just too many empty twisty roads to play on and had to cut that short to make the hotel in decent time!

If you haven’t been, Id highly recommend Beaune, lovely place. planning on bring the missus here next year.

Just above lac leman on part of the grand tour route.

Well the only damage on the trip was two curbed rims! The swiss seem to have them everywhere!! little 2-3 inch granite things!!!

A proper fix is a winters job, as all four will be off to the powder coaters, and two curbed will need to be sent to the machine shop first to get the finish back. In the interim a bit of a tidy up with the rattle cans!

The rear came out fairly well on would happily pass a 5 yard test. The front is being a bit annoying with one bit picking up some contamination between the colour and laquer, so Im doing that bit again! (good job I dont want the car till weekend next)

A little annoying, we have all done it at some time driving.
Main thing is you enjoyed Switzerland and all the fantastic scenery out there and not to mention those amazing roads and alpine valleys
Enjoy:thumbsup:

Your welcome - you cant just paint Magneseum wheels - they have to have someform of chromate or something like that applies first etc for them to last.

I'd give him a ring and he'll explain. If you go down the facebook feed you can see a fw setsof 355 challenge and ordinary wheels

Well that was a pain in the ass!

For some time there has been the odd whiff of coolant. Two years ago the rhd radiator went and was replaced. The mechanic said there was a sign of a weep some time ago on the lhd radiator but recommend leaving it as it was an old weep. I did at the time question my decision to take his recommendation!

The smell has since persisted and last week on closer inspection it looked like a very small weep on the lhd radiator between the core and top. Taking it out it was a bit worse on the other side; so new radiator time!

I bought a superformance aftermarket one as its all aluminium, unlike the ferrari ones which have plastic ends; not a good idea in my view!

But not being oem, mounting points sre slightly different and need different bolts and locating pins are too long and needed to be cut down! ffs!!! Also I made a school boy error and didn't test fit the drain plug before I put it all back together. Something is up with the threads and the plug doesnt fit properly; fortunately it does seal, but will need to be done properly over the winter, probably retapped.

All seems watertight, just needs a run out tomorrow to give it an “italian tune up”! Didnt take as much coolant as I thought it might, but will measure against the old radiator!

Oddly enough Carrs billed my 5 hrs to do the rhd radiator, and with the above messing about I spent 5 hours total on the lhd radiator! Me thinks tbey were over generous with the bill :hmmm:

There isnt a different drain plug altogether you should be fitting with it is the? I would give them a call about that

As there isn’t anything on the website you’d think not….however!

Radiator is supposed to come with a new drain plug! And because its english its imperial thread so the oem plug doesn’t fit! FFS.

Anyway, superformance posted it out and I fitted it this afternoon. All good but could have saved 1-2 hours of my life!

Hopefulness now all good; little test drive tomorrow then ready for Loire end of month.

Coming up to service time; cam belts this year so engine out!!

Im likely to go to Carrs due to convenience; whilst there are a number of good indies within 2 hrs; each way is then a day out!

Has anyone had a recent engine out and what did you pay?

Sorry I was going to clarify my comments but I was too late.
Carrs in exeter. It was £1995 for the cambelt and service items.
I‘m not sure what models they do a discount for but certainly up to 355.

Cheers, seems prices have gone up a bit; just been quoted £2.5k at Carrs. (inflation for you I guess!)

To check prices, I called Dick Lovett. They quoted £5.25k. My polite take away is they didn’t want my business!!

Whilst the indies would be cheaper, by the time I factor in either shipping costs or time off work, there isn’t anything in it, so booked back into Carrs for late October!

That's totally having a laugh. This is the sort of price indies over this side of the country charge:

Barr-tech have actually been recommended to me from a guy who's had his 355 looked after them for years so plan to give them a shout when mine is due next year.

Last time I checked it is similar here.
